Description: Cinemas from 1920 on offered Mexicans privacy rarely obtainable elsewhere. Despite church and state efforts at containing male sexuality, Mexicans regularly found sex partners in movie theaters, and occasionally found space there to have sex. By the end of the twentieth century, a few cinemas had become centers of burgeoning queer communities. This paper places Mexican queer history in the contexts of media history and the history of masculinity to answer this question.

It is not necessary to read the paper in advance to attend the talk. If you would like to read the paper, please email josh.mentanko@yale.edu for a copy.
