Lucía is a Colombian first year in Grace Hopper College. Having lived in Bogotá for all of her life, she is passionate about the implementation of Transitional Justice in Colombia. She has worked for Colombia’s Truth Commission’s cultural committee, looking at how different cultural manifestations throughout the country were affected by the conflict and how new ones were created by communities to create processes of resistance and resilience. Her work in the Commission introduced her to the power of memory reconstruction in the creation of a national narrative that is inclusive of previously marginalized communities as a way to reach peace. She is currently interested in how this process has been achieved through music by women leaders (cantaoras) in the Afro Colombian communities found in Colombia’s Pacific coast, and how their culture is shared in other parts of Latin America like Ecuador and Brazil. Lucía also volunteers for the Elm City Echo, dances with the Yale Tango Club, publishes her poetry in Asterisk, and is a Community Consent Educator.
