Sandra is a junior in Jonathan Edwards College. (she/her/hers) She grew up in El Monte, California and her family comes from the Náhuatl and P’urhépecha people of Michoacán and Puebla, México. She is a junior studying environmental studies with a focus on food and agriculture. She enjoys mentoring people, dancing traditional Mexican folklore, listening to stories and cooking with her ancestral foods.

Sandi’s research interests lie in maíz (maize) politics and culture in Indigenous communities of Latin America but she more broadly looks at Indigenous food systems. Her research project focuses on the cultural transitions and stories in the ongoing changes in Indigenous or campesino families who are impacted by globalization. She hopes to learn more about how these narratives can better inform the science and policies around land and agriculture with the campesino/Indigenous communities.
