Gender & Policy Forum Continued in Mexico City Last Week

December 7, 2022

On Friday, December 2, as part of the annual meeting of the LAIGN Conference in Mexico City, I held the second session of the Second Edition of the Forum on Gender & Public Policies on Leadership and Political Participation of Women.

The Gender & Policy Forum seeks to strengthen links between academia and politics to carry out exchanges that serve both sectors. In this session, the discussion considered the greater need to tackle social norms and stereotypes about women in public life, to end violence against women in politics, and to promote women leaders within political institutions. It discussed to what extent existing policies, practices, and paradigms in Latin America must be better suited to prevent reversals in women’s political rights. It focused on promoting gender-responsive measures for women’s participation in politics.

The panel moderator was Mariana Iglesias, Chief Editor of Gender for Clarin newspaper. Two scholars presented: Juliana Restrepo Sanín, ¨Strategies to combat violence against women in political life. What is Latin America up to?¨ and Virginia García Beaudoux, ¨Unequal scenarios for women’s leadership and political participation.¨ On behalf of the policymakers were Belen Sanz Luque, Director of UN Women Mexico, and Ligia Fabris, from FGV Direito Rio.
