Leslie Harkema on Queen Sofía Spanish Institute Translation Prize committee

June 2, 2020

This past year Leslie Harkema was asked to serve on the reading committee for the translation prize given by the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute in New York City. The prize was for the best English translation of Spanish-language poetry from Spain published within the last ten years. The prize was awarded to Philip Silver, Professor Emeritus of Spanish at Columbia University, for his translation of Claudio Rodríguez’s Alliance and Condemnation.

Professor Harkema was invited to represent the reading committee in this virtual interview with Professor Silver, along with Christopher Maurer, Professor of Spanish at Boston University. As it happens, they represent three generations of Hispanists, as Professor Maurer studied with Professor Silver, and Professor Harkema wrote her dissertation under Professor Maurer’s direction.  View Interview.
