The undergraduate major in Latin American Studies is designed to increase understanding of the culture and societies of the region. Dozens of elective courses are offered each semester in more than 10 different disciplines. The program builds on a foundation of language and literature, history, and the social sciences, culminating in a senior essay project reflecting significant independent research.
Although there is no advanced degree in Latin American Studies at Yale, graduate and professional students may draw upon resources of many departments in order to make Latin America their field of concentration while working toward their respective degrees in conventional disciplines.
Graduate Students may earn a graduate certificate of concentration in Latin American and Iberian Studies in conjunction with graduate degree programs in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Professional Schools. Admission is contingent upon the candidate’s acceptance into a Yale graduate degree program.
The Council also supports travel to Latin America through summer research fellowships for selected undergraduate and graduate students including the Albert Bildner Prize for the best junior year research proposal, and the Latin American and Iberian Studies Travel Prize.
