LIFFY 2022 is coming: Get the Know this Year’s Fantastic Jury!

October 10, 2022

The 2022 Latin American & Iberian Film Festival at Yale (LIFFY) is slated to start on November 7th and will run until November 13th. This year’s jury includes: Tatiana Rojas Ponce, Dahlia Fischbein, and Miguel Rueda. Three notable film experts we want to introduce you today.

“LIFFY prides itself on always having a jury of film professionals,” says LIFFY’s Founder & Executive Director, Margherita Tórtora. “Our filmmakers greatly appreciate their judgement because they are being evaluated by experts in the field. The jurors volunteer their time because they truly love film and appreciate our mission of bringing a free festival of films about Latino and Iberian subjects to a broad audience. We are deeply grateful to these passionate film professionals for dedicating time to watch and evaluate more than 60 films that will participate in our competitions for Best Feature Fiction Film, Best Feature Documentary Film, and Best Short Film.  Winners will be announced after the closing night film on Sunday, November 13th.”

Tatiana Rojas Ponce is a Venezuelan researcher, cultural activist and documentary filmmaker, currently in the NYU Spanish and Portuguese PhD program. As a documentary filmmaker, she has directed, produced, and edited multiple projects related to Latin American Indigenous movements, feminist struggles and the relationship between art and labor. She has twice won the best film editing prize of the Santiago Álvarez International Documentary Film Festival in La Habana, Cuba. As a cultural activist she has been involved in several cine-clubs and video production democratization initiatives with grassroots social movements in Venezuela. She has also worked in alternative media like ViVe TV, Ávila TV (Venezuela), Faro TV (Argentina) and teleSUR English (Ecuador).

Rueda’s passion for film and his specific motivation for becoming a juror for the 2022 festival is the gratification he feels when learning about the world through film.

Miguel Rueda is a filmmaker and animator, with a Masters in Fine Arts from Academia Superior de artes de Bogotá (ASAB), and a degree in Graphic Design, Animation and Multimedia from LaSalle College, Bogotá Colombia. In 2008 he founded Aguijon Films in New York with the purpose of creating and participating in animation projects, films and multimedia. He has been invited to present his films at several film festivals, as well as to speak at Yale University, Fairfield University and CUNY to talk about the animation process.

Rueda spoke about his motivations for becoming a part of the 2022 jury. Rueda has already served as juror for LIFFY prior to 2022, and he complemented the welcoming environment LIFFY has to offer as well as the wonderful team of filmmakers, directors, and festival planners who he worked with. Further, his passion for film and his specific motivation for becoming a juror for the 2022 festival is the gratification he feels when learning about the world through film. In addition to the techniques and innovations within film, one can truly experience the diversity our world offers. He greatly looks forward to serving on LIFFY’s jury once again.
