There is consensus that humanitarian actors should respond to the mental health and psychosocial needs of displaced populations through multisectoral action and coordination. Multisectoral programming may enable the integration of mental health and psychosocial support with services designed to address critical social and structural determinants of mental health including poverty, stigma, safety and security, and social connectedness and cohesion. Professor Yang-Yang Zhou will be presenting the research of her new book project ‘Rejecting Coethnicity: the Politics of Migrant Exclusion by Minoritized Citizens’. How are migrants received by host countries and communities? A substantial body of scholarship on migrant reception focuses almost exclusively on majority White citizens in the Global North and their (negative) attitudes towards migrants from the Global South.
Using social media data for over 2 billion individuals, Professor Hsiang uses new techniques to study whether climate change is likely to contribute to global migration flows.

Matches”, an International Women’s Day lecture with our visiting professor, Amneris Chaparro Martinez, researcher on feminist political theory and epistemology at the Center for Research and Gender Studies (CIEG) at UNAM in Mexico City. Countries in Latin America have enjoyed periods of democratic revival and suffered from periods of democratic decline since their independence. Recent events in Peru and Brazil add to the many cases in which democracy was about to break, but it did not.
The Latin American History Speaker Series Presents René Cordero is currently a graduating Ph.D. student in the History Department at Brown University. His research examines how the student movement in the Dominican Republic galvanized different sectors of Dominican society and embraced a hemispheric and global circulation of discourses on racial consciousness, anti-imperialism, and historical revisionism. His work attempts to place the Dominican Cold War experience at the center of debates about imperialism, third-worldism, and race.
